BARREN ISLAND EXPEDITION
A VOLCANO IN THE BAY OF BENGAL
Barren Island in Andaman is the only active volcano in South Asia. The volcano recorded its first eruption in the year 1787 and since then the volcano has erupted 8 more times. The volcano is active now, spewing lava and smoke.
The height of the volcano is 354 metres (1,161 ft), but most of the volcano lies underwater up to 2250 metres below the surface. The 3 km long island is mostly covered by the volcano and its lava.
